At least 36 Palestinians, including six near a major aid center, were killed by Israeli forces in Gaza on Saturday, according to local civil defense sources.
The shootings happened close to a humanitarian aid distribution point in Rafah, run by the Gaza Humanitarian Fund (GHF). This center had just reopened after similar deadly incidents earlier in the week.
Thousands of Palestinians have been gathering daily to receive food and supplies, but eyewitnesses say Israeli troops fired warning shots and then opened fire on civilians.
Israel claims its troops fired to protect themselves from people approaching in a threatening manner, but the United Nations and aid agencies are raising concerns over the growing civilian death toll.
Meanwhile, a humanitarian boat carrying activists, including Greta Thunberg, is sailing toward Gaza, hoping to break the blockade and deliver relief supplies.
International rights groups are warning that further military action against the aid vessel could violate humanitarian laws.
