Thousands of mourners filled Tehran's streets today, Friday, June 28, 2025, for the funeral of Iran's Revolutionary Guard head and other top commanders and nuclear scientists. These figures were tragically killed during the recent 12-day conflict with Israel.
The coffins of Gen. Hossein Salami, the Guard's chief, and Gen. Amir Ali Hajizadeh, who led the ballistic missile program, were carried on trucks along Azadi Street. Crowds chanted "Death to America" and "Death to Israel," reflecting intense public sentiment.
Salami and Hajizadeh were among the first casualties, killed on the conflict's opening day. Israel had launched strikes specifically targeting commanders, scientists, and key facilities, aiming to dismantle Iran's nuclear capabilities.
Notably, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was not immediately visible at the public funeral, though state TV offered no images of him. He has historically offered private prayers over caskets before public processions.
Among the prominent figures present were Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, Gen. Esmail Qaani, who heads the Quds Force, and senior adviser Gen. Ali Shamkhani. Shamkhani, still recovering from injuries from Israel's initial attack, was seen using a cane.
