Title: Syrian Authorities Arrest Suspects in Deadly Damascus Church Attack
Post by: Abdulrahmon Mubarak on Jun 23, 2025, 06:04 PM
Syrian leader Ahmed Al-Sharaa has vowed justice for those behind the "heinous" suicide attack on a Damascus church that tragically killed 25 people and wounded 63 on Sunday. The attack occurred in the working-class Dwelaa district of the Syrian capital.

The Syrian interior ministry confirmed on Monday that several suspects have been arrested in connection with the bombing. Interior Minister Anas Khattab stated that the operation targeted cells affiliated with the Daesh group, though Daesh has not yet claimed responsibility.

Al-Sharaa emphasized the critical need for unity and solidarity between the government and people to counter threats to national security. This attack, the first church suicide bombing in Syria since 2011 and the first of its kind in Damascus since Assad's ouster, highlights ongoing security challenges.

The UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, strongly condemned the assault, expressing condolences and calling for a full investigation to hold perpetrators accountable. The UN reaffirms its commitment to supporting the Syrian people's pursuit of peace.

International condemnation has been swift. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan pledged support for the Syrian government's fight against terrorism, ensuring extremists won't destabilize the nation. French President Emmanuel Macron and the EU also denounced the attack, stressing the need to defeat terrorist organizations.

This tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the fragile security situation in Syria and the global call for protecting minorities and fostering peace amidst ongoing transitions.
