Sudan's military has accepted a weeklong ceasefire proposal from the United Nations for El Fasher, aiming to facilitate critical UN aid efforts in the region. This agreement was announced by the army on Friday.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres personally requested the humanitarian truce from Sudanese military leader Gen. Abdel-Fattah Burhan for El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur province, to ensure aid delivery.

Burhan has agreed, emphasizing the importance of implementing relevant UN Security Council resolutions. However, it remains uncertain if the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) will comply with this ceasefire.

Guterres stated the UN is actively contacting both sides, highlighting the "dramatic situation in El Fasher" that necessitates this truce. No specific details on the ceasefire's effective date have been released yet.

Sudan plunged into war in April 2023, escalating tensions between the army and RSF. The conflict has tragically killed over 20,000 people, displaced more than 14 million, and pushed parts of the country towards famine.

El Fasher, under military control, has been besieged by the RSF for a year. Guterres stressed the truce needs advance agreement to prepare for a large-scale aid delivery to the conflict-ridden city and its surrounding displacement camps.
