Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov reaffirmed strong support for Syria's independence during a joint press briefing with Syria's Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al Shaibani in Moscow.
Lavrov clearly stated that Russia rejects using Syrian land for political power struggles between foreign nations. He stressed that Syria should never be a stage for other countries' disputes.
He also expressed hope that Syria would overcome its present difficulties. Lavrov called on the global community to avoid actions that may worsen tensions, especially in the troubled southern region.
Russia welcomed the Red Cross's plan to set up a center in Sweida. Lavrov believes this will help bring calm and prevent more violence in the area.
Lavrov highlighted the need for open and inclusive dialogue among Syrians to secure long-term peace. He said the transitional government's current plans offer a hopeful step forward.
Russia also supports Syria's September parliamentary elections and future rebuilding efforts.
