VATICAN CITY — In a heartfelt Sunday appeal, Pope Leo called for an immediate ceasefire in Sudan and the urgent establishment of humanitarian corridors to deliver aid to suffering civilians. Expressing deep sorrow over the escalating brutality in El-Fasher, Darfur, the pontiff described the ongoing violence as "an affront to human dignity and peace."

During his weekly Angelus address in St. Peter's Square, Pope Leo condemned the "indiscriminate violence against women and children" and the repeated attacks on defenseless civilians. He emphasized that blocking humanitarian assistance only worsens the unbearable suffering faced by innocent people trapped in the conflict zone.

The pope urged the international community to respond "decisively and generously," highlighting the moral responsibility of world leaders and organizations to intervene and provide relief. His message underscored the need for global unity in protecting lives and restoring peace in Sudan, where the humanitarian crisis continues to deepen.

According to the United Nations human rights office, hundreds of civilians and unarmed fighters were reportedly killed late last month when the Rapid Support Forces seized control of El-Fasher, the Sudanese army's last stronghold in Darfur. The fall of the city, after an 18-month siege, has forced tens of thousands to flee in search of safety.

Pope Leo's call adds a powerful moral voice to growing international concern over Sudan's prolonged war, which has displaced millions and created severe food and medical shortages. His appeal aims to awaken global conscience and inspire urgent diplomatic and humanitarian efforts.

In addition, the pope expressed concern about post-election unrest in Tanzania, where recent clashes have caused numerous casualties. He urged all parties to renounce violence and "walk the path of dialogue," reaffirming his commitment to peace, reconciliation, and the sanctity of every human life.
