UK Politicians Push for Urgent Adoption of Islamophobia Definition

Prominent British lawmakers have urged Housing and Communities Secretary Steve Reed to swiftly adopt a new and clearer definition of Islamophobia amid a worrying rise in anti-Muslim hate crimes across England and Wales. Their call follows new statistics revealing a 19 percent increase in hate incidents targeting Muslims within the past year, reflecting deep societal tensions and the need for decisive government action.

In a strongly worded letter, 40 Members of Parliament described the adoption of the new definition as a "vital step" toward curbing prejudice and discrimination against Muslims. The recommendation stems from an independent working group formed in February, led by former attorney general Dominic Grieve and British Muslim Network co-chair Akeela Ahmed. The group's mission was to establish a comprehensive understanding of Islamophobia that addresses the "unacceptable treatment, discrimination, and hate" directed toward Muslims or those perceived to be Muslim.

Their findings highlight an alarming surge in hostility, noting that by 2025, 45 percent of all recorded religious hate crimes were directed at Muslims—representing a staggering 92 percent increase since 2023. The MPs urged the government to adopt the new definition in November, coinciding with Islamophobia Awareness Month, to send a strong national message of zero tolerance toward anti-Muslim hatred.

However, the proposal has sparked debate. Critics warn it might restrict free speech, while supporters argue that under the UK's Equality Act of 2010, Muslims remain insufficiently protected, as they are not legally classified as a racial group.

Baroness Shaista Gohir, a working group member, condemned ministers' silence on the issue, insisting that government inaction fuels further intolerance. Labour MP Afzal Khan, who led the letter, stressed that Muslims suffer the highest number of religious hate crimes and called for "a robust definition that safeguards communities while upholding free speech."

A spokesperson for Reed's department confirmed that the recommendations are under careful review, with a formal government response expected soon.
