Title: MURIC Calls For Equal Recognition Of Islamic Marriage For Nigerians
Post by: Abdulrahmon Mubarak on Jul 06, 2025, 08:09 PM
A significant issue for Muslim couples in Nigeria is the lack of official recognition for Nikkah marriages. This creates considerable challenges in formal settings, a situation described as discriminatory in a democratic nation.

The argument is clear: if one religious group's marriage is officially accepted, another's should not be ignored. There's a strong call for Islamic marriages to be granted equal legal recognition alongside Christian marriages.

The Muslim Ummah of South West Nigeria (MUSWEN) is actively pushing for judicial reforms, specifically advocating for the establishment of Sharia Courts. This would provide a dedicated legal framework for Islamic marital matters.

Beyond marriage, MUSWEN also proposed the creation of specialized courts focusing on Islamic finance. This initiative aims to support and facilitate Muslim economic practices within the legal system.

In response to these demands, the Deputy Senate President, Senator Jubrin Barau, offered assurances. Represented by Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, he confirmed that all proposals would receive thorough consideration.

The Senate plans to meticulously review all submissions from the Lagos public hearing and report their findings to the National Assembly. This marks a crucial step toward addressing these vital concerns for the Muslim community.
