Post by: Suyuti1 on May 30, 2025, 01:43 AM
Oyo State authorities have decisively sealed St. Mary Catholic Church, Oke-Padre, Ibadan, citing severe environmental law violations. This stringent action underscores the government's commitment to public health and urban sanitation. Inspections revealed the church's deplorable toilet facilities, leading to pervasive air pollution and unchecked sewage overflow, directly impacting the local environment and its residents.

Seun Ashamu, the State Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, confirmed the closure, emphasizing the urgent need for intervention. He disclosed that the Ministry had received numerous complaints from concerned citizens regarding the church's improper discharge of human waste. "This situation flagrantly contravenes State environmental regulations," Ashamu stated, highlighting the potential for widespread health hazards if left unaddressed.

Ministry officials, during their inspection, documented clear evidence of sewage discharge and an overwhelming foul odor, prompting an immediate formal notice to the church. Ashamu stressed the critical nature of the situation: "We cannot delay action when faeces are being pumped into the streets and the air is polluted. Immediate intervention is paramount to avert a disease outbreak."

Further, the Commissioner revealed that the church allegedly defied the initial sealing order by illegally reopening its premises. This unlawful act resulted in a N500,000 fine. Ashamu affirmed that additional sanctions would be imposed if the church continues to disregard environmental laws, ensuring public safety remains the top priority.
