A hotel housing more than 480 Nigerian pilgrims in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, caught fire on Saturday while the guests were away performing Hajj rituals in Mina. The fire broke out at the Imaratus Sanan Hotel in the Sharamansur area of the holy city.
Thankfully, no casualties were reported as the pilgrims had already left to participate in the symbolic stoning ritual. The fire, however, caused extensive damage to parts of the building before it was brought under control.
The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) confirmed the incident and thanked Saudi emergency services for their swift and effective response. Hotel staff also played a key role in containing the blaze.
NAHCON Chairman, Abdullahi Usman, visited the scene immediately to assess the situation. He met with affected pilgrims and assured them of continued support.
He emphasized that their safety is the commission's top priority and announced arrangements for new accommodations.
Usman praised Saudi authorities for their quick action and reassured Nigerians that all efforts are being made to reduce the pilgrims' discomfort during this sacred journey.
