New York Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is calling for President Donald Trump's impeachment following his decision to bomb top Iranian nuclear facilities. She labels the move as "unconstitutional," igniting a debate on presidential war powers.
Ocasio-Cortez argues that by striking Iranian nuclear sites without congressional authorization, President Trump directly violated the Constitution and Congressional War Powers. This alleged breach forms the basis of her impeachment call.
She declared that Trump's "disastrous decision to bomb Iran" risks "launching a war that may ensnare us for generations." This, she asserts, constitutes clear grounds for impeachment.
Earlier, Trump announced he ordered strikes on Iran's Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan nuclear sites. He confirmed all American planes safely exited Iranian airspace, returning home.
The strikes have drawn bipartisan backlash. Republican Rep. Thomas Massie also echoed impeachment sentiments, simply stating, "This is not Constitutional."
Top Intel Committee Democrat Jim Himes similarly accused Trump of exceeding his presidential authorities, criticizing the lack of advance notice to lawmakers. "My attention to this matter comes BEFORE bombs fall. Full stop," Himes stated on X.
