Title: Belgium Confirms United Nations Recognition of Palestine in September
Post by: Abdullah on Sep 02, 2025, 05:19 AM
Belgium has officially announced that it will recognize the State of Palestine during the upcoming United Nations General Assembly in September. The decision was revealed by Belgium's Foreign Minister, Maxime Prevot, who emphasized that this recognition will go hand in hand with firm sanctions against the Israeli government. This step places Belgium among the growing number of European nations showing strong support for Palestine at the international level.

The recognition is expected to take place during the UN session scheduled from September 9 to 23 in New York. Belgium's decision comes only weeks after French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed that France would also recognize Palestine during the same assembly. The move signals a stronger European push for global recognition of Palestinian statehood and accountability for ongoing violations in Gaza.

Foreign Minister Prevot highlighted that the choice was made because of the humanitarian disaster taking place in Gaza. He pointed out that the continuous Israeli offensives have forced most residents of Gaza to flee their homes multiple times, while the United Nations has already declared a state of famine in the region.

According to Prevot, Belgium has an obligation under international law to act against serious human rights violations. He said the violence by Israel, combined with Hamas's actions, leaves no option but to take stronger measures to push for peace and justice.

The minister stressed that the decision is not directed against the Israeli people but against government policies that ignore international obligations. He clarified that sanctions aim to pressure leaders into respecting humanitarian law.

Belgium's recognition of Palestine at the UN is expected to encourage more Western countries to follow the same path. Observers believe that the September session could mark a turning point in global efforts to achieve lasting peace and justice for Palestinians.
