Title: ABU's New Dress Code: Campus Rules Stir Controversy
Post by: Abdulrahmon Mubarak on Jun 19, 2025, 02:02 AM
Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) in Zaria has introduced a strict new **dress code** for both students and staff. The university aims to foster a "professional and modest" campus environment with these regulations.

The policy, detailed in a Special Bulletin issued on June 16, prohibits various clothing items. These include shorts, skimpy dresses, body-hugging outfits, and any transparent or see-through clothing.

Beyond attire, the code also bans "unkempt appearances," such as bushy hair and beards. Specific accessories like earrings for male students and ankle chains for female students are now forbidden.

The extensive list of prohibitions also covers tattered jeans, revealing skirts, unbuttoned shirts, and certain hairstyles like dreadlocks and colored braids. Engaging in "intimate open embrace (hugging/kissing)" is also prohibited.

Non-compliance with this new dress code will lead to sanctions for both students and staff. The university is set on enforcing these updated guidelines rigorously.

This controversial policy has ignited significant debate across the ABU campus. While the administration asserts it's necessary for a respectful environment, many argue it infringes on personal rights and freedoms.
