The Nigeria Customs Service, specifically the Seme Area Command at the Benin border, made a significant interception. Operatives discovered suspected explosive materials, including corrosive mercury. These dangerous items were cleverly concealed within five cartons of the Holy Quran. This alarming discovery highlights the desperate measures taken by smugglers.

Customs Area Controller Ben Oramalugo addressed the media at the Seme Command headquarters on Wednesday. He confirmed the important seizure of the illicit materials. Oramalugo also announced the successful arrest of a suspect directly linked to this illegal consignment. The suspect is now in custody and is being questioned about the origin.

According to Controller Oramalugo, the suspected explosives were being transported in a red Toyota Avensis. The vehicle bore the registration number GGE 66 JN. Customs officers intercepted the car during their routine checks. This occurred along the busy Badagry–Lagos Expressway, a key transit route.

Oramalugo further revealed that the Seme Command had also intercepted various foreign currencies in April. The total value of these seized currencies, after conversion, amounted to a substantial N8.9 million. He noted that the major breakthrough involving the explosives happened on the night of March 28, 2025, at approximately 8:00 p.m.

This significant bust is considered a major success in the Command's ongoing efforts. They are actively working to crack down on the smuggling of hazardous and strictly prohibited materials across borders. The discovery has understandably raised serious concerns. Authorities suspect a potentially broader smuggling or even criminal network may be involved in these activities. The Customs urged public vigilance. They requested citizens to report any suspicious activities promptly. Such reports can greatly aid in combating the smuggling of dangerous goods nationwide.
