Title: Syrian Government Seeks Strong Partnership With Russia Again
Post by: Suyuti on Aug 03, 2025, 10:21 PM
The new Syrian government has officially reached out to Russia for support. Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani visited Moscow and clearly stated that Syria wants Russia "by our side." This marks the first major diplomatic move since the former Russian-backed regime in Syria was removed last year after decades of rule.

During a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, al-Shaibani admitted that Syria faces many problems. He said these problems are also a chance to build a united and stronger Syria. He emphasized the importance of having Russia's help and partnership during this difficult time.

Al-Shaibani added that while Syria wants to work closely with Russia, some challenges make the relationship complicated. Still, he believes the relationship should be based on mutual respect and cooperation, not just history or pressure.

The former Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad, who had strong ties with Russia, fled to Moscow after being removed from power. He later claimed online that Russia pulled him out of Syria even though he wanted to stay and fight.

Although Russia once attacked Syrian opposition forces to support Assad, the new Syrian leadership is now working with Russia in a more practical way. Interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa seems open to rebuilding ties.

Earlier this year, Russian officials visited Syria, and President Vladimir Putin had a serious and positive phone call with al-Sharaa. Russia still has military bases in Syria and has also sent oil to the country in recent months.
