Title: Muslim Media Urges Ethical Journalism, Qur'anic Values
Post by: Abdulrahmon Mubarak on Jun 28, 2025, 06:43 PM
The Muslim Media Practitioners of Nigeria (MMPN), North Central Zone, has extended felicitations to the Muslim Ummah worldwide on the advent of the new Islamic year, 1447 After Hijrah (AH). This significant year marks the Prophet Muhammad's migration from Makkah to Madinah.

Mallam Mustafa Abubakar, the Zonal Coordinator, expressed gratitude for witnessing this new Hijrah year. He urged all Muslims, especially media practitioners, to draw profound inspiration from the spiritual and ethical lessons embedded in the Hijrah, symbolizing truth, sacrifice, and reform.

Abubakar particularly emphasized the critical importance of truthfulness and verification in journalism. He cautioned against the destructive impact of unverified information, which can severely damage the media landscape and public trust.

He cited Surah Al-Hujurat, verse 6, from the Qur'an, as a foundational guideline for ethical information dissemination. This verse stresses careful investigation of news to avoid harming others ignorantly, a principle mirroring Article 1 of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) Code of Ethics.

"It is clear that the Qur'an and the Sunnah strongly advocate for diligence, accuracy, and verification—values that also form the bedrock of responsible journalism," Abubakar stated. He believes that journalism, when guided by both divine ethics and professional standards, can play a pivotal role in nation-building, peace promotion, and development.

Mallam Abubakar implored Muslim journalists to view themselves as moral agents entrusted with the sacred duty of upholding truth. He concluded with prayers for Nigeria's peace, security, and moral rebirth in the new Hijrah year, hoping for renewed commitment to ethical communication.
