The deepening hunger crisis in Gaza is prompting urgent calls from nearly 40 U.S. Senate Democrats demanding President Trump address what they call a preventable humanitarian disaster. A strongly worded letter accuses the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF)—a U.S.-backed aid organization established under Trump's administration—of worsening civilian suffering rather than easing it.
Senators argue that GHF, formed in February with Israeli support, has failed to deliver aid effectively and is partly responsible for a rising death toll. Since May, over 1,000 starving Palestinians have reportedly been killed near GHF aid distribution sites, drawing fierce condemnation. Democrats say this reflects broader policy failures and call for the resumption of ceasefire negotiations.
The letter, addressed to Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, pushes for expanded aid delivery by trusted international groups. Senator Brian Schatz labeled the Israeli-led system "not working at all," saying its military clearly has the capacity to control aid crowds but has chosen ineffective methods instead.
Signed by key Jewish Democratic senators, including Chuck Schumer and Adam Schiff, the letter also urges the safe return of Israeli hostages still held in Gaza. It reflects rare Democratic unity on a divisive foreign policy issue, especially after many had supported Israel's war approach during the Biden era.
Although some Republicans, like Senator John Cornyn, continue to defend Trump's strategy, others show signs of concern. Far-right Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene described the ongoing starvation of civilians in Gaza as "horrific" and called for an end to the crisis.
For Democrats, the worsening scenes from Gaza are not just tragic—they're a stain on U.S. global leadership.
