The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has said that good governance remains the only path to rescue Nigeria from its current struggles. He lamented that the country has suffered from weak and careless leadership for far too long.
Speaking at the second Kano International Poetry Festival, organized by Poetic Wednesdays Initiative, the Emir noted that Nigeria is still trapped in petty divisions while other nations are discussing issues of global importance. He highlighted that leadership quality directly determines the progress or decline of any nation.
According to him, Nigeria wastes valuable time on religious and tribal arguments, while countries across the world are tackling challenges like climate change, innovation, and artificial intelligence. This backward focus, he stressed, keeps the nation tied to debates that should have been resolved decades ago.
The Emir warned that irresponsible borrowing and careless spending by government leaders will bring dangerous consequences for the economy in the future. He explained that without discipline and accountability, such financial recklessness will leave the younger generation burdened with debt.
Sanusi also challenged Nigerian youths to take active roles in governance, stressing that they have the power, numbers, and energy to replace old leaders who have mismanaged the nation for years. He urged them to rise with determination and rescue the country from stagnation.
The festival, themed "Poetry in a Time of Crisis", reminded poets and artists to use creativity as a tool for peace and solutions, especially in the troubled northern region of Nigeria.Source:
