Respecting elders is a core Islamic value that nurtures dignity, mercy, and community harmony. Islam teaches us to honor those older than us in age, knowledge, or virtue.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
"لَيْسَ مِنَّا مَنْ لَمْ يَرْحَمْ صَغِيرَنَا، وَيُوَقِّرْ كَبِيرَنَا"
"He is not one of us who does not show mercy to our young and respect to our elders."

Allah commands kindness to parents — the ultimate form of elder respect:
وَقَضَىٰ رَبُّكَ أَلَّا تَعْبُدُوا۟ إِلَّآ إِيَّاهُ وَبِٱلْوَٰلِدَيْنِ إِحْسَـٰنًا
"And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him, and be kind to parents."
— Surah Al-Isra' (17:23)
The Sahaba demonstrated profound respect for their elders. Abdullah ibn Abbas (RA), despite his youth and vast knowledge, would sit humbly in the company of older companions and serve them out of reverence. Umar ibn Abdul Aziz (RA) would stand to greet elderly scholars with warmth and humility.
Elders are seen as vessels of wisdom and experience. Respecting them includes speaking gently, listening to their advice, and offering service when needed.
This manner cultivates a caring, stable society and invites Allah's barakah (blessing).
