A tragic incident occurred in Patigi Local Government Area of Kwara State when armed men stormed a mosque and killed a worshipper during night prayers. The victim, identified as 45-year-old Alhaji Dahiru, lost his life while resisting an attempted abduction inside the mosque. The shocking attack has left the local community in fear and mourning.
The incident happened on August 30 at about 8:30 p.m. during Ishai prayer. Worshippers who were inside the mosque said the gunmen disrupted the prayer session, causing panic and confusion. The attackers were said to be about seven in number, and they came fully armed, targeting the victim.
Security analyst Zagazola Makama confirmed that the gunmen attempted to abduct Dahiru, but he resisted their efforts. Sadly, in the struggle, the attackers shot him dead instantly before escaping the scene. Their quick exit was aided by motorcycles, which allowed them to disappear before security forces could arrive.
Residents who rushed to the scene after the attack reported that two empty AK-47 shells were recovered inside the mosque. This has raised concerns about the growing use of sophisticated weapons by criminal groups in the region. The community is calling for stronger security to protect worshippers.
Family members of the late Dahiru have appealed to authorities for the immediate release of his body. They wish to bury him quickly in line with Islamic rites, as is the tradition in the Muslim community.
Authorities in Kwara State have assured the public that investigations are ongoing. Security forces have intensified efforts to track down the perpetrators and restore safety in the Patigi area. The attack has once again highlighted the urgent need for better security in places of worship across Nigeria.
