A 54-year-old prophet, Yomi Adetula, was shot dead by unknown gunmen during a church service at the Celestial Church of Christ, Eagle Parish, in Odo Eran, Idiroko area of Ogun state.
The incident occurred on Sunday at about 10:30 am. The assailants, numbering three, entered the church and opened fire on the victim.
After shooting Adetula, the gunmen used an axe to severely damage his head.
They then fled the scene.
The police were notified, and officers rushed to the scene. They found Adetula lying in a pool of blood, wearing his white celestial garment.
The police spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the incident. According to Odutola, Adetula's body was riddled with bullets, and his head was badly damaged.
The police are investigating the incident. The corpse has been deposited at the General Hospital morgue in Ilaro.
Efforts are underway to apprehend the fleeing suspects, who escaped towards the border area. The police are working to determine the motive behind the killing.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the community. The Celestial Church of Christ has not commented on the incident.
