Gunmen attacked Karongi town in Kwara State early Sunday morning. The attackers came while local vigilantes were away for Eid celebrations and a training program.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers, believed to be part of the notorious Mahmuda group, stormed the town from around 6am to 11am, causing fear and damage before help arrived.
One person was killed, and many houses were burned during the attack. The Emir of Yashikira confirmed that the victim was a local man helping with security.
With no immediate defense in place, support was requested from nearby towns. A joint force of soldiers and vigilantes finally drove the attackers away after hours of chaos.
The Emir called on the government and army to set up a permanent security post in or around Karongi to stop future attacks.
The Nigerian Army later confirmed the attack and the loss of a vigilante fighter.
