Saudi Arabia took a major step in highlighting its defense capabilities at the Defense and Security Equipment International (DSEI) arms fair in London. The Kingdom's pavilion attracted global attention as it demonstrated advanced hardware, technology, and its growing role in the international defense industry.
The General Authority for Military Industries (GAMI) led the Saudi pavilion, alongside key organizations such as Saudi Arabian Military Industries (SAMI), Saudi Chemical Co. Ltd., GDC Middle East, and the World Defense Show (WDS). Their participation reflects the country's drive to strengthen its defense sector under Vision 2030.
Vision 2030 aims to transform Saudi Arabia into a global technology hub by localizing more than 50 percent of military spending. While historically one of the world's largest arms importers, the Kingdom has reduced its dependency on foreign suppliers, with weapon imports dropping 41 percent between 2020 and 2024, according to SIPRI.
Saudi Arabia is also securing landmark international deals. In May, it signed a $142 billion arms agreement with the United States, the largest in defense sales history. This demonstrates the Kingdom's ability to balance global partnerships while strengthening domestic production.
Looking ahead, Riyadh will host the third edition of the World Defense Show in February 2025. The event is expected to feature more than 80 countries and 925 exhibitors under the theme "The Future of Defense Integration." Specialized zones will showcase naval systems, unmanned technologies, and innovative defense solutions.
Through initiatives like the Future Talent Program and a strong supply chain collaboration, Saudi Arabia is building not only modern defense systems but also future expertise. The Kingdom's growing presence on the global stage positions it as a hub of innovation, integration, and strategic defense cooperation.
