The development follows a 48-hour nationwide telecommunications blackout that paralyzed businesses and isolated millions of Afghans. Reports from multiple provinces reveal that mobile Internet has become painfully slow, with users struggling to connect consistently. The watchdog confirmed that the disruption shows a deliberate pattern rather than a technical failure.

The Taliban government has not officially responded to the reports. However, the move mirrors earlier actions when high-speed Internet was deliberately cut in certain provinces to curb what leaders described as "immorality." The sweeping blackout, which reduced connectivity to just one percent of normal levels, raised international concerns about censorship and the government's growing control over communications infrastructure.

Since regaining power in 2021, the Taliban has imposed stricter interpretations of Islamic law while tightening its grip on public freedoms. Cutting digital access marks a new level of control, especially in a society where the Internet plays a vital role in education, commerce, and global connection. The blackout demonstrated how fragile Afghanistan's communication lifelines remain under current governance.

Data shows that at the start of 2025, around 13.2 million Afghans had Internet access, accounting for 30.5 percent of the population. Of these, approximately 4 million actively used social media. Restricting such a significant portion of connectivity threatens to deepen isolation in an already struggling nation.

Observers warn that further clampdowns could silence dissenting voices, cut off opportunities for youth, and push Afghanistan further into global digital isolation.
