Germany Urged to Consider Israel Sanctions After Lawmaker's Visit

A top German lawmaker, Siemtje Moeller, has urged her government to consider sanctions against Israel, including suspending arms exports and pausing key European Union agreements. Moeller, who serves as deputy leader of the Social Democrats (SPD) in Germany's parliament, made the call after a recent visit to Israel alongside Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul.

Moeller shared her concerns in a letter to fellow SPD lawmakers, stating that the Israeli government is unlikely to shift its policies without external pressure. "If such concrete improvements fail to materialise in the near future, there must be consequences," she warned in the letter, as reported by Reuters.

Her remarks signal a more critical tone from Berlin, though Germany has yet to make any official policy changes in response. Moeller's SPD party recently entered a coalition with Chancellor Friedrich Merz's conservative bloc, creating a united but diverse front on foreign policy matters.

The call for possible sanctions reflects growing frustration within parts of the German government over Israel's actions in the ongoing Gaza conflict. Suggestions include a partial suspension of weapons deliveries and the freezing of broader political cooperation within the EU framework.

While the statement does not yet represent an official German position, it marks one of the most serious internal calls for accountability measures aimed at Israel. Observers say it may influence broader European debates on how to respond to the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
