An immigration judge in Louisiana has ordered the deportation of Palestinian Columbia University graduate student Mahmoud Khalil to either Syria or Algeria. The ruling, issued on September 12 by Judge Jamee Comans, is now being challenged in federal court as Khalil's attorneys argue that the decision is politically motivated and unjust.

Court documents reveal that the deportation order stems from allegations that Khalil failed to disclose certain details in his green card application. However, Khalil maintains that the accusations are fabricated and part of a broader attempt to punish him for his outspoken advocacy on behalf of Palestinians. A federal judge, Michael Farbiarz, has temporarily barred immigration officials from removing Khalil while his habeas corpus case is ongoing.

Khalil strongly condemned the ruling, describing the immigration court as a "kangaroo court" used to silence his voice. He insisted that the Trump administration's renewed effort reflects a pattern of retaliation against activists who speak out against U.S. support for Israeli policies.

The ruling follows earlier attempts to remove Khalil under a rarely used law introduced by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, claiming his activism undermined U.S. foreign policy. Critics argue that the government's case rests heavily on a memo rather than solid evidence, making the claims legally weak and politically charged.

Khalil's attorneys also rejected claims that he misrepresented his ties to organisations such as the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA). They contend that the government's accusations lack merit and highlight a disturbing trend of criminalising pro-Palestinian activism in the United States.

The deportation order has sparked outrage among Khalil's supporters, including Jewish Voices for Peace, who see the ruling as an attack on freedom of speech and academic activism. Many of them broke down in tears during the court session, though Khalil reassured them calmly, holding his prayer beads and expressing gratitude.

This case has now become a flashpoint in the debate over immigration, activism, and U.S. foreign policy—raising urgent questions about whether political dissent can be punished through the immigration system.
