A significant number of representatives from the Board of Deputies of British Jews are appealing disciplinary actions taken against them. These sanctions arose from their public criticism of Israel's conduct in the Gaza conflict. This situation highlights a notable internal disagreement within the UK's largest Jewish representative body.

The Board of Deputies recently disciplined 36 representatives. Five members received a two-year suspension, and 31 others were reprimanded. Their offense was signing an April letter where they declared they could "no longer remain silent" about the extensive loss of life in Gaza.

The disciplined members have confirmed their intention to appeal the Board's ruling, as reported by The Guardian. They continue to voice deep concern for the remaining hostages, the "appalling humanitarian crisis," and the ongoing conflict's devastating impact on Gazan civilians.

In their collective statement, the deputies underscored their solidarity with the majority of Israelis who desire an immediate end to the conflict. They firmly stated there was "no justification for the continuing misery and destruction being wrought on Gazan civilians."

The Board of Deputies, when announcing the punishments, clarified that the letter was neither authorized nor shared with the organization before its publication in the Financial Times. They noted receiving numerous complaints about the letter and its subsequent media coverage.

Harriett Goldenberg, one of the suspended members and former vice chair of the board's international division, shared that many UK Jews agreed with their "groundbreaking letter." She lamented that such a voice, representing broad sentiment, "is still needed."
