The UN's highest court in The Hague commenced hearings on Monday regarding Israel's responsibility to ensure and facilitate the urgent delivery of humanitarian aid to Palestinian civilians in the occupied territories. This legal action, prompted by a UN General Assembly request, brings renewed international focus to the ongoing conflict in Gaza and Israel's obligations.

The General Assembly's resolution, spearheaded by Norway, seeks an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice on Israel's legal duties to guarantee the unimpeded flow of essential supplies crucial for the survival of the Palestinian civilian population. This non-binding yet significant decision comes as Gaza's humanitarian aid system teeters on the brink of collapse.

Since March 2nd, Israel has blocked the entry of vital resources, including food, fuel, and medicine, into Gaza. This blockade intensified following the renewal of bombardments on March 18th after a ceasefire breakdown, as Israel aimed to pressure Hamas for more hostage releases. The World Food Programme reported its food stocks in Gaza have completely depleted due to Israel's prolonged blockade.

Forty states and four international organizations are slated to present their arguments during the week-long hearings. While Israel is not scheduled to speak, it retains the option to submit a written statement. The United States, which opposed the UN resolution, is expected to address the court on Wednesday. The court's ruling, anticipated to take months, could significantly influence international law, aid to Israel, and global public opinion.

Experts suggest that this advisory opinion could provide crucial clarity, potentially pressuring Israel to ease restrictions on aid delivery, although the actual impact on Israeli policy remains uncertain. Israel has historically criticized the UN for alleged bias and previously disregarded a 2004 ICJ ruling. South Africa, a vocal critic, will present its case on Tuesday, following its earlier accusations of genocide against Palestinians in a separate ongoing ICJ case.
