UN Condemns Food Weaponization in Gaza, Demands Action

The United Nations has condemned Israel's apparent "weaponization of food" in Gaza, a practice deemed a war crime. On Tuesday, the UN human rights office urged Israel's military to "stop shooting at people trying to get food," citing dire humanitarian conditions.

The UN notes that Israel's "militarized humanitarian assistance mechanism" contradicts international aid distribution standards. Desperate and hungry civilians in Gaza face an "inhumane choice" between starvation and risking death while seeking food.

Food distribution by the U.S.- and Israel-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) began after a two-month blockade, which led to mass famine warnings. The UN and major aid groups refuse to cooperate with GHF, fearing it aligns with Israeli military objectives.

UN rights spokesman Thameen Al-Kheetan reported "harrowing scenes" and fatalities around GHF distribution points. Over 410 Palestinians have reportedly been killed by Israeli military action while attempting to access GHF aid, with another 93 killed near UN convoys.

These incidents have resulted in at least 3,000 Palestinian injuries, demanding prompt, impartial investigations to hold those responsible accountable. The UN asserts that this system "endangers civilians" and exacerbates Gaza's already catastrophic humanitarian situation.

The UN human rights office demands immediate action: Israel must cease firing at civilians seeking food, lift restrictions on humanitarian aid, and ensure sufficient life-sustaining necessities for Gaza's population. Other countries are urged to compel Israel to fulfill its duties.
