U.S. Seeks International Force to Secure Lasting Gaza Peace

In a decisive diplomatic push, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced renewed efforts to assemble an international peacekeeping force for Gaza, following a fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. His visit to Israel, shortly after Vice President JD Vance's, reflects Washington's determination to ensure both sides respect the truce and lay the groundwork for lasting stability in the region.

Rubio emphasized that establishing "conditions for a stabilization force" is vital for sustaining peace and preventing further escalation. Meeting with Israeli and Western military officials at a ceasefire monitoring site in southern Israel, he expressed optimism for a durable resolution to the two-year conflict that began with Hamas's October 7, 2023, attacks. The deal, led by President Donald Trump, calls for an international security mission to maintain post-war order and protect humanitarian rebuilding efforts.

Meanwhile, major Palestinian factions, including Hamas, agreed to form a temporary committee of independent technocrats to administer Gaza's basic services after the war. The body will work with Arab nations and global organizations to restore infrastructure, governance, and essential living conditions. Hamas also joined calls for revitalizing the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) as the sole legitimate representative of the Palestinian people.

The international peace force, still under negotiation, is expected to unlock global reconstruction funding—strictly barred from reaching Hamas-controlled areas. Rubio confirmed Israel would have veto power over participating countries, amid reports of objections to Turkey's involvement. Nations like Indonesia and the UAE have shown willingness to contribute troops under certain conditions.

While the U.S. may seek a United Nations mandate to formalize the mission, Rubio dismissed any future role for UNRWA, citing Israeli restrictions. His statement underscores Washington's intent to balance humanitarian aid with strict oversight to prevent militant rearmament.

Mediators Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey have assured Hamas that "the war has effectively ended," signaling cautious optimism that this ceasefire could mark a turning point toward long-term peace and reconstruction in Gaza.
