Turkiye condemns Netanyahu genocide remarks as Gaza war distraction

Turkiye has strongly condemned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for his recent comments on the Armenian killings of 1915. Ankara's foreign ministry said Netanyahu's words were not genuine recognition but rather a political attempt to shift attention away from Israel's deadly campaign in Gaza.

According to Turkiye, Netanyahu is using historical tragedies for his own agenda. The ministry stressed that the Armenian events of World War I should not be misused to cover up present-day crimes against humanity. For decades, Turkiye has rejected the label of "genocide" for those events, maintaining that it was a result of war conditions, not an organized massacre.

In its response, Turkiye directly linked Netanyahu's statement to what it described as Israel's atrocities in Gaza. Officials accused him of attempting to hide behind history while ignoring the suffering of Palestinians, who continue to face widespread destruction and death during the ongoing conflict.

Israel, on the other hand, has dismissed all genocide accusations as false and politically motivated. Yet international pressure continues to mount. The International Criminal Court (ICC) has already issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and his former defense minister, Yoav Gallant, over alleged war crimes, including the use of starvation as a weapon.

Netanyahu made his controversial remark during an interview on the PBD Podcast. When asked why he had not recognized the Armenian genocide before, he simply replied: "I just did," sparking immediate outrage in Turkiye.

The case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) also continues. South Africa has accused Israel of breaching the UN Genocide Convention during its Gaza offensive. Judges are still examining the evidence as global attention remains fixed on both Gaza and Netanyahu's leadership.
