Former U.S. President Donald Trump reignited debate on Afghanistan by demanding the return of Bagram Air Base, a facility central to America's two-decade military presence. Trump stated that discussions were underway with Afghanistan but declined to clarify whether redeployment of U.S. troops was being considered. His remarks sparked renewed global attention on the strategic site.

In his statement, Trump expressed impatience with the Taliban, declaring the U.S. wanted Bagram "back right away." He stopped short of outlining potential consequences but hinted that his administration would not hesitate to act if diplomatic engagement failed. His comments echoed his long-standing criticism of the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan.

The Taliban government swiftly rejected Trump's appeal. Chief spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid stressed that Afghanistan follows an economy-focused foreign policy rooted in realism and mutual interests. He underscored that Afghanistan's independence and territorial integrity remain non-negotiable, reminding the U.S. of commitments under the Doha Agreement.

That agreement, signed in 2020, bound Washington not to interfere in Afghanistan's internal affairs or threaten its sovereignty. Mujahid noted that Trump's proposal contradicts those pledges. He emphasized Afghanistan's desire for constructive global relations while warning that sovereignty is not up for bargaining.

The debate over Bagram comes against a backdrop of symbolism. Last year, the Taliban staged a military parade at the base using abandoned U.S. equipment, celebrating their takeover and reinforcing their narrative of victory. The display drew criticism from Washington and highlighted the stark consequences of America's 2021 withdrawal.

Trump has repeatedly blamed Joe Biden for mishandling the exit, calling it a "catastrophic failure." During a recent trip to the United Kingdom, he suggested Afghanistan's economic struggles and lack of international recognition might eventually pressure the Taliban to reconsider U.S. engagement.

Despite having no formal diplomatic ties, the U.S. and Taliban continue indirect talks, especially on hostage matters. Earlier this year, the Taliban freed an American citizen after negotiations involving Trump's special envoy. Such exchanges reveal limited but pragmatic channels of communication between the two adversaries.
