Tens of thousands of pro-Palestinian supporters filled Istanbul's historic Beyazit Square this weekend, marching by torchlight to condemn Israel's war and blockade on Gaza. The march sent a powerful message of unity and solidarity to the people of Gaza.

Banners reading "Be a Light of Hope for Gaza" were held high as activists, civil society groups, and citizens waved Palestinian flags. The crowd chanted "The children of Gaza are waiting for us" while walking through the city's streets.

The rally was organised by 15 Turkish non-governmental organisations under the Palestine Solidarity Platform. It began after evening prayers and moved through the iconic Grand Ayasofya Mosque, filling the night with the glow of torches.

Since October 2023, Israeli forces have killed more than 61,000 Palestinians. In March, Israel blocked humanitarian aid for Gaza's 2.4 million people, creating severe shortages of food, medicine, and water.

On 11 August, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called for a meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation's foreign ministers to plan an urgent global response. He said Türkiye is using all its diplomatic and state resources to help Gaza.

Türkiye's long-standing friendship with Palestine has grown stronger since October 2023. The Turkish Red Crescent has delivered over 15,000 tonnes of humanitarian aid to Gaza through its Goodness Ships, bringing vital supplies to those in desperate need.
