The Taliban government in Afghanistan has announced a complete ban on fibre optic internet services in Balkh province, citing the need to "prevent immorality." This decision has cut off Wi-Fi access for government institutions, private businesses, educational facilities, and households, leaving mobile internet as the only remaining option.

According to provincial spokesperson Haji Attaullah Zaid, the directive was issued by Taliban leader Hibatullah Akhundzada. He explained that the move was meant to curb immoral activities, adding that the authorities intend to build a local alternative to meet essential communication needs. However, no clear timeline or explanation was provided for why Balkh specifically was targeted.

This unprecedented restriction marks the first such ban since the Taliban regained control of Afghanistan in August 2021. Residents initially assumed it was a technical issue until service providers confirmed the official order. The sudden shutdown has sparked frustration and confusion among local communities.

A resident of Mazar-e-Sharif described the situation as deeply disruptive. His six-member family, including a student, depended on Wi-Fi for education and daily tasks. He noted that mobile internet is costly and slow, making it insufficient for most needs in an increasingly digital world.

The ban has also created severe challenges for businesses. One entrepreneur revealed that his operations, which rely heavily on online communication with international partners, have nearly collapsed. He warned that if restrictions persist, he may be forced to relocate to another province to sustain his livelihood.

In the past, Taliban authorities have temporarily suspended mobile networks during religious festivals to prevent potential attacks. Yet, the complete shutdown of fibre optic services is seen as a drastic step with far-reaching social and economic consequences.

Observers fear that the decision could further isolate Afghanistan from global systems, weaken educational opportunities, and discourage investment in a region already facing immense economic struggles.
