A prominent Nigerian lawmaker, Hon. Saidu Musa Abdullahi, is advocating for the federal government to declare the first day of Muharram as a public holiday. This day marks the beginning of the Islamic New Year. His call comes as he extends congratulations to Muslims nationwide on the advent of Hijrah 1447 AH.

Rep. Abdullahi, who serves as the Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Finance, specifically lauded several state governors. He commended the leaders of Niger, Borno, Kano, Katsina, Osun, Oyo, and Sokoto states for already recognizing Muharram 1st with a public holiday, highlighting its significant spiritual importance.

The lawmaker, a respected figure, urges the federal government to follow suit. He believes that adopting this gesture at the national level would be a crucial step towards fostering greater unity and mutual respect within Nigeria's multi-religious society.

Abdullahi emphasized that acknowledging dates of religious significance for all major faiths strengthens a sense of belonging among citizens. Such inclusivity, he argues, is vital for the nation's social fabric.

He further articulated that the Islamic New Year offers a valuable opportunity for spiritual renewal and reflection. It encourages recommitment to noble values like sacrifice, perseverance, and piety, exemplified by Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and his companions during the Hijrah.

Finally, Hon. Abdullahi called on all Nigerians to use this significant period to pray for peace, demonstrate compassion, and unite towards the collective goal of national development. He reaffirmed his dedication to promoting inclusive policies that celebrate Nigeria's rich religious and cultural diversity.
