Italy's Defence Minister, Guido Crosetto, has strongly condemned the overnight drone attacks targeting an international flotilla delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza. The flotilla, consisting of multiple boats, came under assault off the coast of Greece, raising urgent concerns about the safety of both activists and Italian citizens on board.

In response to the unfolding crisis, Crosetto authorized the immediate deployment of the Italian Navy's multi-purpose frigate, Fasan, currently positioned north of Crete as part of Operation Safe Sea. The vessel is en route to the affected area to support potential rescue and protection operations for those aboard the flotilla.

"The safety of Italian citizens participating in the flotilla is our utmost priority," Crosetto stated. He described the attacks as "unacceptable" and expressed "the strongest condemnation" against the unidentified perpetrators using drones to target humanitarian efforts.

Italy's Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, also emphasized the importance of protecting Italian citizens and officials, including members of parliament and MEPs, who are part of the pro-Palestinian mission. Tajani has formally requested Israel to ensure their safety during ongoing operations.

The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs underscored that any action undertaken by Israeli forces must strictly adhere to international law and prioritize absolute caution. This directive highlights Italy's commitment to the safety and human rights of individuals involved in humanitarian efforts.

Minister Tajani further instructed the Italian Embassy in Tel Aviv to closely monitor the situation and maintain continuous communication with Israeli authorities. The embassy has been tasked with reiterating Italy's demand for "absolute protection" of all personnel on board the flotilla.
