Hamas Demands Reliable Global Guarantees Before Accepting Permanent Gaza Truce

Hamas has reiterated its willingness to pursue a comprehensive ceasefire in Gaza but insists on concrete international guarantees to ensure that Israel will honour any agreement reached. Speaking to Egypt's state-run Al-Qahera News channel, senior Hamas leader Khalil al-Hayya said the group is prepared to end the ongoing conflict, facilitate the withdrawal of Israeli forces, and release all Israeli captives—both alive and deceased—in a negotiated exchange for Palestinian prisoners outlined under former US President Donald Trump's plan.

Al-Hayya, a key figure in the negotiation process, criticised Israel's conduct since Hamas first accepted the terms of Trump's proposal. He accused Israeli forces of continuing military operations and obstructing humanitarian aid deliveries, particularly in northern Gaza, despite Hamas's stated willingness to pursue peace. According to him, this pattern of behaviour reinforces long-standing concerns about Israel's credibility in honouring ceasefire commitments.

Recalling the breakdown of a previous ceasefire agreement in November 2023, al-Hayya accused Israel of violating the terms and reigniting hostilities shortly after the deal was implemented. "Israel has never honoured its promises throughout history," he said, adding that Hamas "does not trust the occupation for even a single moment."

The Hamas negotiator called for tangible assurances from the international community, the United States, and states involved in mediating the talks to ensure that any future agreement is respected. Without such guarantees, he warned, a sustainable and lasting peace would remain elusive.

Al-Hayya emphasised that Hamas's ultimate goal is to secure the Palestinian people's right to freedom, statehood, and self-determination. These aspirations, he said, cannot be fulfilled under the shadow of continued aggression and mistrust.

"The war must end forever," he concluded, "so that our people may live in peace, stability, and dignity, just like other nations of the region."
