Negotiations aimed at securing a long-term ceasefire in Gaza have entered a crucial phase, with Hamas demanding the release of prominent Palestinian political figure Marwan Barghouti from Israeli custody. According to Egyptian state-linked media, the discussions are part of a broader prisoner-hostage exchange deal currently taking place in Sharm El-Sheikh, a coastal city known for hosting high-level diplomatic talks. The involvement of senior leaders and the stakes of the negotiations underscore their potential to reshape the dynamics of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Barghouti, a leading figure in the Fatah movement, has been imprisoned since 2002 on multiple charges linked to the Second Intifada. Revered by many Palestinians as a symbol of resistance and unity, his release has long been a central demand in any significant prisoner negotiations. Alongside Barghouti, Hamas is also pressing for the release of other well-known detainees, including Ahmad Saadat, Hassan Salameh, and Abbas Al-Sayed, whose names carry considerable weight in Palestinian society.

The talks follow a 20-point proposal reportedly initiated by former U.S. President Donald Trump, aiming to end the ongoing Gaza war triggered by the October 7, 2023 attacks. These attacks led to the capture of Israeli hostages by Hamas and other militant groups, dramatically escalating the conflict and prompting global calls for de-escalation.

Under the proposed deal, Israel would release 250 Palestinian prisoners serving life sentences, as well as over 1,700 detainees arrested during the conflict. In exchange, Hamas and allied factions would free the hostages held in Gaza. The plan also envisions a phased Israeli withdrawal from the enclave and the gradual disarmament of Hamas.

Hamas leadership has signaled a willingness to finalize the agreement swiftly, emphasizing their readiness for an immediate exchange and a comprehensive ceasefire. If successful, the negotiations could mark a significant turning point toward de-escalation and renewed dialogue.

The release of Barghouti, in particular, is seen as a potential catalyst for Palestinian political reconciliation and renewed peace efforts, highlighting the far-reaching consequences of the ongoing talks.
