European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen held a meeting with Syrian President Ahmed al Sharaa on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

In a joint statement on X, the EU leaders described the discussion as a "good exchange" focused on the challenges Syria continues to face during its political transition.

They reaffirmed the European Union's commitment to supporting "a genuine, inclusive, peaceful, and Syrian-led transition—free from harmful foreign interference."
