More than 5,000 residents of Kirawa, a border town in northeastern Nigeria, have fled into neighbouring Cameroon after Boko Haram militants launched a brutal overnight assault. According to local officials and community leaders, the attack, which occurred late on Thursday, left the town in ruins as fighters burned down a military barracks, the district head's palace, and numerous homes. District Head Abdulrahman Abubakar confirmed he had no choice but to escape across the border for safety, joining thousands of terrified residents seeking refuge.

The assault, captured in a video circulated by Boko Haram, showed armed militants chanting "Allahu Akbar" as they set fire to security installations. Community members reported that Kirawa is now virtually deserted and under insurgent control. "Boko Haram is in charge," said Dauda Hassan, a resident who fled to Pulka, where Nigerian troops are stationed. This attack follows a similar incident on September 19 in Banki, another border town, where militants overran a military base, seized weapons, and forced troops to withdraw.

Local leaders have called for urgent military reinforcements, as vigilantes and civilians remain the only defense after a multinational task force pulled out in August. These escalating attacks reflect a broader trend of intensified operations by Boko Haram and its splinter faction, ISWAP, targeting both civilians and security forces throughout Borno State. Despite temporary losses, the Nigerian military has consistently retaken affected areas following reinforcements.

Reflecting on the enduring insurgency, former President Goodluck Jonathan revealed during a recent book launch that Boko Haram once nominated Muhammadu Buhari to represent them in peace negotiations during his tenure. He expressed hope that Buhari's eventual presidency might have led to a peaceful resolution, but the conflict remains unresolved.

Jonathan emphasized that Boko Haram's motivations are complex and often misunderstood, citing their access to sophisticated weapons as evidence of foreign support. He advocated for comprehensive documentation of the group's history, including testimonies from former members, to better understand the roots of the insurgency.

Since emerging in the early 2000s, Boko Haram has waged a relentless campaign of terror — including abductions, bombings, and attacks — across northeastern Nigeria. Despite years of military operations, the group continues to destabilize the region, highlighting the urgent need for coordinated national and regional responses to end the crisis.
