This compelling narrative from the first century offers a powerful glimpse into the interaction between a powerful ruler, Ar-Rasheed, and the esteemed scholar, al-Fudayl ibn 'Iyaad, highlighting profound lessons on leadership, humility, and the pursuit of truth over worldly gain.

One day, Ar-Rasheed, a prominent ruler, sought out al-Fudayl ibn 'Iyaad, asking for admonition. He desired guidance, a testament to his openness to wisdom beyond his royal authority. Al-Fudayl began by recounting a significant exchange involving Ar-Rasheed's own grandfather, Al-'Abbaas, the uncle of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Al-'Abbaas had once approached the Prophet, requesting to be appointed as a leader. The Prophet's response was deeply insightful: "My uncle, indeed, being a leader leads to sorrow and regret on the Day of Resurrection. If you are able to go without ever being a leader, then do so!"

These words resonated deeply with Ar-Rasheed, bringing him to tears. Moved, he asked for more guidance. Al-Fudayl then looked directly at the ruler and offered a poignant piece of advice: "O one who has a handsome face, if you are able to protect that face from the Hell-fire, then do so. And beware of ever cheating or betraying your people." This counsel was a direct appeal to Ar-Rasheed's conscience, urging him to prioritize his eternal well-being and the welfare of his subjects above all else.

Profoundly affected by Al-Fudayl's sincerity and the weight of his words, Ar-Rasheed wished to reward him. He inquired, "Do you have any debts?" Al-Fudayl's reply immediately shifted the focus from earthly concerns to spiritual accountability: "To my Lord, yes, and He will hold me accountable for them." Ar-Rasheed clarified, "I am, of course, referring to debts to other human beings." When Al-Fudayl confirmed he had none, Ar-Rasheed instructed his assistant to give him 1000 dinars to assist his family.

Al-Fudayl, however, was visibly offended by this offer. "SubḥanAllah! (How perfect Allah is!) I am guiding you to safety, and you want to reward me with this paltry, worldly sum!" With these words, he departed, refusing any material recompense. His action underscored his absolute sincerity and his commitment to advising purely for the sake of Allah, valuing the knowledge of the hereafter far above any material possessions.

This story offers invaluable lessons for both leaders and individuals. It illustrates the characteristics of a wise ruler: one who actively seeks and remains open to the counsel of knowledgeable scholars.
