President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the immediate reduction of the 2026 Hajj fare to make the sacred journey to Makkah more affordable for Nigerian Muslims. Vice President Kashim Shettima, conveying the directive during a meeting with the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) in Abuja, gave the commission just two days to present a revised fare structure. The decision reflects the government's commitment to ensuring that the benefits of Nigeria's improving economy are felt by all, particularly those fulfilling one of Islam's most significant pillars.

The Vice President emphasized that the recent steady appreciation of the naira against the dollar — a major factor influencing Hajj expenses — must directly translate into reduced pilgrimage costs. He called for close collaboration among federal and state officials, including governors, to streamline the new pricing and ensure smooth coordination. Shettima also urged all stakeholders to prioritize timely payments and remittances to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to guarantee a seamless and well-organized Hajj exercise.

Senator Ibrahim Hadeija, Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, explained that the review aims to align Hajj fares with current economic realities. He noted that pilgrims previously paid between ₦8.5 million and ₦8.6 million due to unfavorable exchange rates. With the naira strengthening under Tinubu's economic reforms, the government believes the reduced rates should ease the financial burden on intending pilgrims and make the journey more accessible.

Dr. Mustapha Mohammad, Secretary of NAHCON, welcomed the presidential directive, highlighting its potential to increase the number of Nigerian Muslims able to perform Hajj. He assured that the commission would work tirelessly to achieve the lowest possible cost, thereby expanding access to this vital act of worship.

Leaders of state pilgrim welfare boards have also lauded the decision, describing it as a major relief for thousands of Muslims planning to embark on the 2026 Hajj. Alhaji Faruk Aliyu Yaro, Deputy Chairman of the Forum of Chief Executives of Pilgrims Boards, praised the government's swift action and commitment to easing the financial challenges faced by prospective pilgrims.

This bold intervention by President Tinubu's administration underscores its dedication to religious inclusivity and economic empowerment. By linking fiscal policies to citizens' spiritual needs, the government aims not only to reduce the cost of pilgrimage but also to strengthen public confidence in ongoing reforms. For many Nigerian Muslims, this decision brings renewed hope of fulfilling a lifelong dream of performing Hajj.
