In a historic diplomatic breakthrough, Saudi Arabia and France have achieved overwhelming support at the United Nations for their joint initiative on Palestine. The New York Declaration, drafted during a July conference co-hosted by Riyadh and Paris, was endorsed by 142 nations at the UN General Assembly. This milestone represents one of the strongest global endorsements yet for a two-state solution.

The declaration calls for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. It also emphasizes the urgent need for a Gaza ceasefire, the safe release of hostages, and the disarmament of Hamas under international supervision. These steps aim to pave the way for long-term peace and stability.

French President Emmanuel Macron hailed the vote as proof that the international community is "charting an irreversible path towards peace in the Middle East." He stressed that Israel and Palestine can live as two peoples and two states in peace and security.

The Saudi Foreign Ministry echoed this sentiment, saying the resolution reaffirms the international consensus on granting Palestinians their legitimate rights. It highlighted that the initiative reflects Saudi Arabia's enduring commitment to peace, justice, and regional stability.

The New York Declaration also proposed a temporary international stabilization mission under the UN Security Council to support Palestinians and oversee the gradual transfer of security responsibilities to the Palestinian Authority. This mechanism is seen as crucial for rebuilding trust and protecting civilians.

The next step will be a one-day UN conference on September 22, co-chaired by Saudi Arabia and France. Several countries, including France, the UK, Canada, Belgium, and Australia, have already pledged to formally recognize Palestine.
