Pope Leo XIV has made a heartfelt appeal for courage and persistence from leaders working to establish peace in Gaza. Speaking after the Sunday Angelus prayer in Vatican City, the US-born pontiff said the recent agreement to begin a peace process has offered "a spark of hope" in the Holy Land. He urged both Israelis and Palestinians to remain steadfast on the path toward a fair and lasting peace that acknowledges the rights and aspirations of both peoples.

His call came as world leaders prepared for a high-level summit in Sharm el-Sheikh, co-chaired by US President Donald Trump and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi. The meeting aims to push forward a ceasefire plan in Gaza, nearly two years after the conflict reignited following Hamas's October 7, 2023 attack. That attack triggered an Israeli counter-offensive which has since claimed more than 67,000 Palestinian lives.

Pope Leo XIV expressed deep sorrow over the toll of the war, emphasizing that beyond the physical devastation, the emotional wounds remain profound. "Two years of conflict have left death and destruction everywhere, especially in the hearts of those who have lost their children, their parents, and their friends," he said. He prayed for divine help to achieve reconciliation, stressing that enemies must be seen as brothers to forgive and rebuild with.

The pontiff also extended his concern to Ukraine, where continued Russian attacks on cities and civilian infrastructure have caused new casualties, including children. He lamented the prolonged suffering of Ukrainians who have endured years of anguish and deprivation.

Pope Leo once again pleaded for an end to violence worldwide, underscoring that peace is not just political but deeply humanitarian. His words come at a time when global diplomacy faces immense pressure to balance multiple conflicts.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called on Trump to extend his peace efforts from the Middle East to Eastern Europe. He said if one war can be halted through diplomacy, there is hope that others could also be stopped.
