Mecca, Saudi Arabia – A disturbing trend of fraud targeting Nigerian pilgrims during the sacred Hajj has been brought to light by Professor Imam Abubakr Ali-Agan, an esteemed Islamic scholar and lecturer at the University of Ilorin. Currently undertaking the pilgrimage himself, Prof. Ali-Agan revealed alarming instances of deceit in a video, underscoring the unfortunate reality that some individuals are exploiting the spiritual journey for illicit gains.

Despite the profound religious significance of the Hajj, certain Nigerian pilgrims are reportedly preying on their fellow citizens. These fraudsters masquerade as helpful individuals offering currency exchange services, only to swindle unsuspecting victims. Prof. Ali-Agan explained that some unscrupulous individuals arrive in Mecca armed with numerous one-dollar bills, which they then use to defraud others under the guise of converting larger sums into Saudi Riyals.

A poignant example cited by the professor involved an elderly pilgrim from Yobe State who was tragically defrauded of $495. The victim entrusted $500 to a supposed helper for conversion, only to receive five one-dollar notes in return. The scam was only uncovered when the elderly man visited a legitimate money exchange center.

Prof. Ali-Agan vehemently condemned these actions, labeling them a "shameful stain" on Nigeria's international image and a "sinful" act in the holy land. He urged all pilgrims to exercise extreme caution and vigilance, emphasizing that the Nigerian government has designated officials specifically for currency exchange. He stressed the importance of never handing over money to strangers to avoid falling victim to these pervasive scams.

The scholar warned that such incidents not only lead to diplomatic embarrassment for Nigeria but also carry severe spiritual repercussions for those involved. His exposé serves as a crucial warning for all pilgrims, reinforcing the need for awareness and adherence to official channels during their sacred journey.
