The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has strongly condemned the continuous killing of journalists in Gaza by Israeli forces, describing the act as a violation of human rights and international law. The union insists that journalism is not a crime and must never be silenced through intimidation or violence.

According to NUJ President, Alhassan Yahaya Abdul, at least 274 journalists have been killed in Gaza since the war began. He stressed that these deaths are not accidental but a direct attack on freedom of the press, aimed at preventing the world from hearing the truth about the suffering of Palestinians.

Abdul made the remarks during an interview with Iran Press on Sunday, August 17, 2025. He declared that the role of journalists is vital in conflict zones because they provide facts that help shape global understanding. Silencing them, he said, is an attempt to hide atrocities from international attention.

The NUJ has called on the United Nations and other global organisations to immediately launch an independent investigation into Israel's actions. It insists that those responsible for the killings must be held accountable under international treaties.

Abdul emphasised that lasting peace in the region can only be achieved through dialogue, fairness, and justice rather than violence. He urged world leaders to protect press freedom as a fundamental pillar of democracy and conflict resolution.

Global attention is now fixed on the UN and other international bodies to see whether decisive action will follow against Israel for what NUJ calls the cruel murder of journalists in Gaza.
