Israeli protesters filled the streets in Tel Aviv and across the country on Sunday, demanding a hostage deal with Hamas as tensions over the Gaza war deepened. Police responded with water cannons and arrested at least 38 demonstrators after highways were blocked and fires lit during the "day of stoppage."

The strike was organized by hostage families and bereaved groups, calling on the government to act urgently to save the remaining captives in Gaza. Protesters fear that further military action could risk the lives of hostages, some of whom have been shown in recent disturbing videos. Families of those still missing carried photos and yellow ribbons, the symbol of the hostage campaign.

According to the Israeli military, 49 hostages remain in Gaza. At least 27 are believed to be dead, while around 20 are thought to be alive in Hamas custody. Former hostages joined the demonstrations, warning that military pressure would not bring loved ones back safely. "The only way is through a deal, all at once," one protester said.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has opposed any agreement that would allow Hamas to retain power in Gaza. He insists the war must continue until Hamas is fully defeated, arguing that ending it early could repeat the horrors of October 7, 2023, when militants first launched their attack.

Despite mounting pressure, Netanyahu's government faces sharp divisions. Some far-right ministers warned that striking a deal could endanger Israel's security and even topple the coalition government. Critics argue that delaying negotiations only prolongs suffering.

The protests are among the largest since the deaths of six hostages discovered in Gaza last September. Demonstrators say their campaign will continue until the government prioritizes human life and secures the safe release of all hostages.
