Russia has formally recognized the Taliban's government in Afghanistan, becoming the first nation to do so since their 2021 takeover. Moscow's decision follows the removal of the Taliban from its list of outlawed organizations. This significant move, announced by the Russian Foreign Ministry, signals a push for "productive bilateral cooperation" and marks a new chapter in Afghanistan's international relations.

Afghanistan's Foreign Ministry lauded this "historic step," with Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi expressing that it sets "a good example for other countries." This recognition is a major diplomatic victory for the Taliban, who have actively sought international legitimacy since the withdrawal of U.S. and NATO forces in August 2021.

Despite this breakthrough, the Taliban government has faced widespread global isolation, primarily due to its severe restrictions on women's rights. These restrictions include barring women from most employment and public spaces, and preventing girls from accessing education beyond the sixth grade, starkly contrasting initial promises of a more moderate rule.

Russian officials, however, have increasingly emphasized the necessity of engaging with the Taliban to stabilize Afghanistan. The ban on the Taliban was lifted by Russia in April, paving the way for this formal recognition.

Russian Ambassador to Afghanistan, Dmitry Zhirnov, confirmed that President Vladimir Putin made the decision based on the recommendation of Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. Zhirnov stated this move underscores Russia's "sincere striving for the development of full-fledged relations with Afghanistan," highlighting a clear shift in diplomatic strategy.
