The Israeli government has forcefully condemned France's recognition of the State of Palestine. This diplomatic move has drawn sharp criticism from Jerusalem, escalating tensions.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu conveyed Israel's strong disapproval via his official X handle. He stated, "We strongly condemn President Macron's decision to recognise a Palestinian state next to Tel Aviv in the wake of the October 7 massacre."

Netanyahu asserted that such a step "rewards terror and risks creating another Iranian proxy, just as Gaza became." He warned that "a Palestinian state in these conditions would be a launch pad to annihilate Israel — not to live in peace beside it."

The Prime Minister further clarified Israel's stance, emphasizing, "Let's be clear: the Palestinians do not seek a state alongside Israel; they seek a state instead of Israel." This reflects Israel's long-held security concerns and interpretation of Palestinian ambitions.

French President Emmanuel Macron announced this major diplomatic shift via his official X handle on Wednesday, confirming France will formally recognize the State of Palestine. He stated this decision aligns with France's "historic commitment to a just and lasting peace in the Middle East," with a formal announcement expected at the UN General Assembly in September.

Macron also stressed the urgent need for a ceasefire in Gaza, humanitarian aid, hostage release, Hamas demilitarization, and Gaza's rebuilding. France's decision increases the number of countries recognizing Palestine to at least 146, while the U.S. continues to withhold such recognition, potentially complicating Franco-American relations.
