This Sallah season, a significant shift is underway in Nigeria: many Muslim families are opting for chickens instead of rams for their Eid al-Adha sacrifices. The reason? The country's tough economic climate is making traditional ram purchases simply unaffordable for many.

Market vendors are reporting an unprecedented boom in chicken sales. "Even chicken meat is pricey now, but at least it's manageable," explained a chicken seller at Mandate Market. He noted that while a large live chicken might cost between N18,000 and N20,000, frozen options offer a cheaper alternative. This sentiment is widespread, highlighting how financial constraints are directly impacting religious observances.

The change isn't just about individual choices; it's a collective adaptation. "We're selling way more chickens this Sallah," another vendor shared. "People are buying four or five chickens to share among their families, completely replacing the ram." This practical decision allows families to uphold the spirit of Sallah and enjoy a festive meal without the financial strain of a ram, which has become a luxury for many.

The affordability and availability of chickens are making them the unlikely hero of this year's Sallah celebrations, demonstrating Nigerians' resilience and adaptability in the face of economic challenges.
